IBC Liners Market Overview
Intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) have the volume capacity more than that of drums and less than that of tanks or transporting containers. For the transportation of liquids, granular products, food items, and some other materials, IBCs liners are incorporated to prevent direct contact from the IBCs and also to prevent the primary product from contamination. Around one-fourth of the volume of lubricant, transportation takes place in IBCs only. Moreover, almost all the food item transportations in IBCs uses IBCs liners. IBCs liners are majorly used for transportation of liquids such as pharmaceutical liquids, lubricants, petrochemicals, liquid food items and others. Although, the IBCs can be directly used for liquids without any leakage, the cost of cleaning a re-usable IBCs is more than the cost of IBCs liners.
IBCs accounted for a large market share in industrial packaging and expected to reach around 15.4% by 2020.
IBC Liners Market Key Developments
Application of high barrier materials such as EVOH and Nylon for manufacturing of IBC liners has led to unaffected quality of primary products. Transportation of food items and pharmaceuticals has greatly benefited by barrier IBC liners due to strict government regulations about the quality of such products. Development in the structure of IBC liners has effectively reduced the efforts made to fill and discharge the primary product into the liners. Open top, filling spout, discharge spout and other filling and discharge options are available in IBC liners to enhance the applicability. Several liner fitments such as clips, crown cutters, discharge valves, caps, screw glands and others are used which reduces the possibility of any contamination or leakage.
The IBCs with a capacity below 250 liters are majorly used in pharmaceutical industry, while the IBCs of capacity 500 to 1000 liters is widely used in food and beverage industry. Above 1,500 liters IBCs are majorly used for industrial purposes. The IBC liners market can be segmented on the basis of material as- Polyethylene (LDPE and LLDPE), PET, EVOH, Nylon, Aluminum, and Others.IBCs liners with barrier materials such as EVOH, nylon, aluminum, and others are rising at a high pace in the global market. LDPE is expected to be the most widely preferred material for monolayer IBC liners. The IBC liners market can be segmented on the basis of shape as Tubular, Form fit, Pillow, and Bespoke.
The shape of IBC liner is completely dependent on the construction of the IBC. As the large number of IBCs are cuboidal in shape, form-fit IBC liners are anticipated to account for a large market share in the global IBC liners market. The IBC liners market can be segmented on the basis of film structure as Monolayer and Multilayer.Monolayer films cost much lower than the multilayer films, while advanced physical properties of the multilayer films have driven the market segment. Moreover, the demand for barrier IBC liners has propelled the market for multilayer IBCs liners. The IBCs liners market can be segmented on the basis of application as Steel IBCs, Plastic IBCs, and Paperboard IBCs.The thickness of IBCs liners is dependent on the strength of the IBC that is the material of IBCs and the primary product to be stored in the container. The number of steel and plastic IBCs is much higher than the number of paperboard IBCs. Thus, the IBCs liners vary in thickness and material on the basis of the application.
The IBCs liners market can be segmented on the basis of end-user industries as Food, Beverage, Chemical, Paint & coating, Pharmaceuticals, Construction, Automotive, and Others (Personal care, homecare, etc.).Transportation of liquid food and beverage accounts for much higher volume than any other product in bulk. Also, the requirement of protection of food and beverage from contamination is high, IBCs liners are incorporated. Thus, food & beverage segment together are expected to account for a large market share than any other end-user industry. The IBC liners market can be segmented on the basis of the geographical region as – North America, Latin America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Middle East & Africa (MEA), Asia Pacific excluding Japan (APEJ), and Japan. The demand of IBCs is higher in the region where the production activities are higher, and the demand of IBC liners is directly dependent on the demand of IBCs. Thus, North America, Asia Pacific, and Western Europe are the regions where the market for IBCs liners is anticipated to be large.
The high volume output and rapidly developing manufacturing industry in Asia Pacific region has resulted in a large number of emerging IBCs liner manufacturers. This is also supported by the high availability of low-cost machinery and easy availability of most of the raw materials in the region. In North America region, the market share of well-established IBCs liner manufacturers is higher while the number of emerging players is much lower.
